Hi,
We have bought a LHD early Westy (we think) hi top camper but the bed piece has been removed and turned into a cupboard. We want to put bed back up top for kiddies so any help, photo's etc of how they work would be really appreciated. So far we have worked out we need a piece of board and something to stop them falling on top of us in the middle of the night ! We just need some ideas, does not have to be exactly right, were not perfectionists, just safe. We are in Sherborne in Dorset.

Whereabouts are you? Stick your location in your profile, your best bet would be to find a friendly member near to yourself and take a look at a bed in person, then take all the measurements you need pics you need etc..

Majority of people in the club are normally more than willing to accomodate!

Scary I need to do exactly the same.

Some one has turned mine into a cupboard too.

So pics or dimensions and suggestions would be appreciated.

Even more scary that we also need to do this. (new offspring enforces T25 change).

There is the empty high top bit

Come on folks, this isn't rocket science

Take two bits of 2x4;

length is variable but on mine they are about a foot and half short of the entire length of the missing bit of roof. The foot and a half is how you get up when the bed is down.

Decide how they are going to attch to the van, the top of the 2x4 will need to be about 1/2 an inch lower than the level of the bed in the back of the hightop. Mine are braketed onto the top of the van. Don't fix them in place.

Get a big bit of 1/2 inch ply.

This should be wide enough to stretch all the accross the hightop between the battons and as long as the battons. You may need to adjust the width a little just check it will slide all the way back into the hightop out of the way.

Fix a plank of some description along the front of your ply to make an L when veiwed from the side. Use brackets or a thin batton, glue, screws, etc. This is to stop your pillows falling off and also makes the ply rigid accross the van.

You can fix a thin batton or battons to the top of the ply for more rigidity but remember you have to sleep on them so make them thin. Mine doesn't have this.

Put the ply up first, then the 2x4s onto the sides. Check it works, you will have to lift the back of the ply slightly before shoving it back into the hightop.

Cover with car interior carpet to taste, this prevents moisture condensation.

Suitable braketry can be fabricated from steel flats or purchased off the self at BnQ.

This is how mine is done and it's simple cheap and effective. I can sleep up there and my children have no problem.
