What happens to gearboxes when not stored properly

I often say to customers that gearboxes are a bit like Christmas presents you really dont know what you have until you open them. Well spite being wrapped beautifully this one was a major disappointment unfortunately nearly every bearing surface and gear tooth has had rust develop on it so destrying the case hardening, think of the pitting like a pothole in a road. On top of that all gears have had very heavy wear on them. The main case has also corroded badly on one side which is probably where the water got in. So basically the entire box is scrap. It was also rebuilt badly in the past one diff bearing being ĺopside in the adjusting ring showing a gap of 2-3mm which wouldn't have helped.
