1.6 Turbo Diesel Exhaust silencer. Catalytic Converter?

The silencer of of my 1985 t25 has cracked where it joins the rest of the exhaust and there’s a lot of rattling going on at the break.
A few questions really. Is it worth welding this back together or do silencers wear out anyway? A new one costs about £80 plus. Will a new one be quieter than a repaired old one?
Secondly could I add a catalytic converter to the system? I’m assuming some retro fitting would be required.
I have a 1.6TD JX engine and would love to make it a bit healthier for those around me if possible.
Thanks all.

Ohh. Thank you for that. Any idea if it’s any better/worse than those for sale at Just Kampers / Brickwerks?

I used one of those, they are usually imported from Germany, for my old 1.6, was on there for years before I upgraded the engine. It was still in good nick when removed.
If your silencer has cracked I would check that your mounting rubbers are still intact.

I had a particle filter (cat) fitted to my jx many years ago, it actually didn't improve things much emission wise, it reduce my tax from 1500 yoyos down to 400. It still only got a red sticker fit the German pollution zones.

I'll check the mountings as well. Thank you.
I think it may have something to do with all the work that's been done on the engine recently. My (now ex) garage didn't realise you need to put in a new stretch bolt every time you tinker with the cam shaft and the old bolt cracked and destroyed the engine! Hence I have a new one, fitted by a new (amazing) garage. The van has had a lot of fussing and movements recently.
It may be worth getting new mounts anyway as they only cost a few quid.
Thanks for the advice.

Did you have it custom built? Or can you take one from a later model?

It was an aftermarket part from Oberland (I think)
