1.9DG starts and runs then stalls.

Hi folks- long time lurker first time posting.

Driving arundel to Brighton today in the rain pulling away or at lower revs kept losing power. Did it I once before (also in the rain). Can keep it running by putting clutch down and playing the accelerator until it evens out but during the course of the journey it got worse. Managed to get to my sister’s in Hove.

My thoughts are - fuel filter. It’s fairly new though and I replaced the fuel tank a year ago with no probs in between so shouldn’t be too much grime in there. I will get a new one tomorrow as they’re cheap.

Fuel pump... have read threads in here about it so will investigate but seems odd that it’s starting fine then cutting out. I’ve made a video of it- Will work out how to share shortly... thoughts appreciated in the mean time.

<UPDATE: SOLVED- replaced fuel filter and seems to be fine now.>

I would look for a loose vacuum pipe or a leak on the inlet manifold. Spray a bit of wd 40 or similar around the inlet and see if the revs pick up. It could be worth checking the cone filter in the carb inlet too.
David.

Thanks David. I’ll check the vacuum on the manifold connections in the morning too. Most of the hoses were renewed with the fuel lines a year or so ago but the brake servo one in particular is a bit ropey looking.

I’d forgotten about the wee cone filter too- I’ll be sure to give it a good clean and report back. :-)

Check the gaskets / spacer under carb. I guess you should check the brake vacuum hose, I think I've seen on previous posts that can also causes rough running if its iffy.
Does the vacuum unit on your distributor work?

Possibly a pinhole leak in your fuel line. Your symptoms sound very similar to mine when touring Scotland a few years back. New fuel lines sorted it. The fuel pump sucks in small air bubbles and so starves the carb of fuel.

Cone filter in carb checked and blown through to be sure.

Vacuum checked on the gaskets with WD40 but it didn’t seem to make any difference- even when it was having a fading moment. I also trimmed down the brake vacuum hose and checked it over. Seems scruffy but otherwise sound.

Can’t get a fuel filter until tomorrow so will have to wait for that.

Re pinhole leak in fuel lines A1Winchester I replaced them all with the BrickWerks kit about 18 months ago so I hope they are still fine.

The vacuum unit on the distributor is also reasonably new. Is there a way I can check it Stesaw?

I think if you blow on the vacuum it should spin the internals. I found if you pull the vacuum lead it should drop the revs by 300rpm, but if it’s broken, it’ll just stall. That’s what mine did anyway.

Tha is for all the support folks- always worth doing the simple (and cheap) things first. £3 fuel filter and it seems to be running fine now.

I’ve preemptively ordered a replacement vac hose for the brake servo off from the intake manifold as it’s deffo past it’s best.

I must remember this post as some very good information regarding a problem which may happen to all.
