After a recent trip home it developed this noise.
I drive it yesterday no knocking at idle when started drive for 20 min came back to this.
Any ideas would be great.

That doesn’t sound great. I know mine knocked 2.0cu when it’s been left a while to do with the hydraulic rappers losing pressure. Maybe worth checking the valve train.

I was on a trip over the weekend and it never missed a beat. 5 miles from home this happened.
I added about 300ml of oil and drove home slowly.
Yesterday I started it up and no problems or knocking.
It is slightly leaking oil but I manage the oil level and check start of each day. It's not gushing out put noticable after say 500 miles driving.

Nice Aircooled diesel you have there.
I probably wouldn't drive it til you get that sorted. It's not going to go away, will no doubt get worse.

Less than 1500km full service with just standard 20W50 mineral oil from Brickwerks.

I'm going to drain the oil and inspect for metal, cut the filter open and inspect. I'll check the rockers after that.
Looks like camping is over for the year

So after trying to adjust the tappets found that it was completely locking between TDC and 180 degrees.
The decision was made to drip the engine and in fairness 1 hour had her in the back if my van.
Maybe a blessing in disguise as the clutch was drenched in oil. Rear main seal must be caput.
Any who time to take the heads off see what's happening and replace anything perishable.

Hello,
If it really won't turn over....
Then we are looking at a dropped valve...

Was the dizzy still installed ?
if not then it could be the dizzy drive gear causing that problem as they try to rise up the shaft.

We have a winner
Looks like the valve guide decide to part ways and played a game of ping pong with the piston and head.
Also when taking the heads off a hydraulic tappet just fell out?
Enough torture for one day so the next question is what to do.
I want to keep the camper original but would like a little more power and seen as it's all apart what does everyone recommend?
Keep stock and put back to OE or are there any modifications worth doing ie larger pistons or the likes that anyone recommends?

Hello,
Looks like you are going down this route...
viewtopic.php?f=37&t=169431
You have dished pistons, so low compression, 95 RON petrol...
Definately not worth oversize pistons and barrels...
