Gasket between oil cooler tower and block. Should there be o

Hi, am just putting my oil cooler and tower back on the engine. 1600 air-cooled CT engine.

In my gasket kit, there are two round rubber gaskets that go on the top of the tower. Seal between the tower and the oil cooler. See picture.

I do not have a gasket to seal between the bottom of the tower and the case. Last picture. Do I need one? Am thinking maybe put some permatex gasket sealant between tower and case?

So long since I took the engine apart, I can't remember if there was one or not.

Many thanks.ImageImageImage

No specific knowledge of this engine but would expect the "gasket" area to be clean, smooth and free from paint regardless of whether sealant, a gasket or "O" rings in recesses were used. Others will advise no doubt.

Many thanks.

Yeah, you are right, I shouldn't have painted over that bit. Think I got a bit carried away on that front!!!

Have found the gasket/seal in question.....

Oil Cooler Mount Gasket CT

SKU: 070-117-289

That's the VW heritage part number. Just ordered one.

There should be a paper seal below the oil cooler tower, and two rubber seals on top, between the tower and oil cooler.

The joys of taking so long to rebuild the engine, can't remember how the bolt on bits go. Ooopppsss!!!!
