rear heater how to change valve - new to forum

Hello all. This is my first forum contribution!! I can see quite a few treads re: the rear original heater under the bench seat and problems with leaks. I have such a leak and looks like its the O seal. I have ordered a replacement together with a new valve from Brickwerks. I have very limited mechanical knowledge and wondered if its something that can be changed easily? Removing bolts etc is fine but I don't know how to stop the fluid/coolant pouring out once I detach the hoses. Do I need to drain it first and if so how do I do it? Any help most welcome. Also a local general mechanic who had a look thought the valve should have an external cable from the dash board control to turn it on and off. I've checked the web and can't find any images with it having a cable. I'm guessing its controlled through an internal mechanism as I have no such cable. Thanks

I know nothing of westies, but clamp the pipes to minimise leakage .
There should be a short cable to the kick board under front of seat it seems
