VW Sharan 1.9TDI (130PS) Cam Belt Service Intervals?

My Brother-in-law has just phoned up all excited to say he's bought a used Sharan (late 2003).
He's completely clueless about anything to do with vehicles, so it'll be up to me to prompt him to look after the cambelt before he breaks his engine.
Does anyone know what the VW recommended interval for the cam belt is on this engine? The vehicle is coming up for 4 years old, with 35k on the clock.
Also, if it does need doing, how much should he pay? I'm guessing a VW dealer isn't the place to go for it?
