Cooling fan

I assume my van has a two speed fan. In the 2-3 years we have had the van I have never heard it run...but then I avoid queues like the plague.
Flushed with success of sorting the gauge with your help I now turn to the fan.
The 30amp fuse in position 1 is fine.
The plug to the sensor has three leads. I can get the fan to run by bridging the central lead to one but not the other. (Haynes says red/blue=high speed, red/white=fuse, red/black=low speed)
Now from what I have read it seems that the problem probably lies with the fan motor itself. This appears to require the removal of radiator etc etc.
So, being lazy, the question is:
Do I really need two speeds in the tropical UK?
And...if so motivated can I simply wire in a manual switch for peace of mind? (OK so it will only work on the speed that is still working)
