Hi Lads,

I faced the inevitable today. My Sump drain plug has been held together with black gunk and a constant small drip from it since I bought it last year. When servicing I drained from the oil strainer but I said I'd face the music this weekend.

The plug came out okay had to pull off loads of black gunk but when I put my finger to the threads bits of the thread came out.

It's a 2.0 CU engine. What are my options?

Easiest option is an over sized sump plug , you can buy kits on eBay

The reason the M14 lost its thread is because the sump plug has been over tightened over the years. Please torque your new M15 / M16 sump plug to 25Nm only including copper washer.

I cleaned threads out as muchk as I could have.

On further inspection there was no copper washer attached to the stud or face of the sump.

That must explain the stripped threads.

I have put PTFE tape on a new stud and a brand new copper crush washer and have torqued them down. Re filled the oil and left a bit of cardboard to see any drips but none.

Then decided to take it for a spin did 30km of normal driving came home no drips.

I'm lucky and I will have to add it to the long list of things that need to be properly fixed thanks!
