Loud engine noise

Hello everyone,

Having not used the van except for short runs locally, we set off for another local trip and felt the engine sounded different. Louder, and a slightly alarming metal clinging/clanking sound. Like it was hitting a bell on each stroke.

I checked the oil cold before setting off and it was 3/4 and no oil lights or different performance or response. We weren't happy to came back home after a few streets.

It has a stainless exhaust from a few years ago, I wondered if it was that that had lost a seal or something, but experience tells me to be very quick to check new noises.

It also had a small oil patch underneath, which is unusual, but it was not big.

That's a video of it just before I shut down.

I'm hoping you're all going to tell me I'm imaging things! But I'm prepared for the truth!

Thanks and stay safe.

tappets leaked down - oil drained out of them..

Go and give it a thrash for ten minutes

I agree, though I wouldn’t say to go and thrash it, not good on a cold engine, but a 5 mile run should sort it out. A search on the forum for noisy tappets should allay your fears

Yep mine was the same, took it out for an essential drive ahem and it was fine when I got back.

Thank you everyone very much, I am reassured!

I remember now reading about noisy tappets on the forum ages ago and it all makes sense. A bit alarming when you first meet it though!

I will go take it for a gentle drive then go the long way round the ring road when it's warmed up.

The furthest it's been in the last months is from the road to the drive to act as sleepover camping for me and the bigger child so it's no surprise they've drained down really!

I love this forum

Stay safe and happy

An interesting opportunity for some Bean like time wasting:

Oil is more likely to drain from the hydraulic tappets if.

a/ You switch off with the engine when baking hot like just off the motorway. Hot oil having reduced viscosity.

b/ You just don't run the engine for a long time. Cooler oil having higher viscosity will take a longer time to drain down.

(All other things being equal of course.)

Thanks everyone. I took it for a drive and to be honest by the time I'd got out of the estate it was back to normal. I must have been being so ginger when I heard the noise first it wasn't getting above 1500 rpm or thereabouts!

A bit alarming when first encountered but a useful lesson for the future.
