Has anyone fitted Mercedes front hub nuts part number A1163340372 as a replacement for the VW peened ones . If so are they a direct replacement or is there anything else you need to do .Thanks Simon C.

That would be a very quick get out item for your insurance co. in a claim situation I should think. I would stick with original items.

beetle boys and other early vw's quite often use a clamping type axle nut (I think Porsche did), not sure why you couldn't use one on a T3, technology is pretty much the same as bay/split, only the weight is really different but peen nuts are cheap enough and only really need replacing when disc or bearings are done - does Brickwerks sell a clamping type one, if not I wouldn't use one, if you are constantly adjusting stuff then you should get a competent garage to do the work.
I note JK don't sell clamp type for T3/T25 but do for bay, and Brickwerks don't

I always thought the Mercedes ones were a strange idea. The idea of having a locking nut that is locked by a screw clamping it when the screw itself has no locking facility on it seems counterintuitive! if the locking screw comes loose, then so does the nut.

Thanks for the advice .I was looking at Mercedes ones as the air cooled Porsche ones are difficult to get hold of. I realise you can use bay window ones if you buy two right handed ones but the Mercedes ones look as if they are much better machined. As I understand it VW changed to the ones you peene because it was cheaper but I may be wrong.
