starter motor problem?

Evening, can anyone tell me how to bypass the trigger wire on the starter motor? My van won't start and i'm trying to get to the bottom of it. My starter has a stud that the 4 large wires go to and what looks like the trigger wire below it. Is it just a case of positive cable to the stud, wire from there to where the trigger wire connects and earth to the chassis. I haven't a clue but willing to try.
All the dash lights come on, the headlights are bright and go dim when turning the key, no clicking or noise from the starter and i've given it a whack.
I had just finished replacing the coolant pipes yesterday and it had been starting fine without any problems. 1.9 dg
thanks David.

No earth to chassis necessary. But some do add one. Also trigger wire goes above on solenoid. It slots on male terminal. On many vans trigger wire comes from stud terminal in black box on left front fire wall...l think

Hang on. Re-reading you write on turning over? Have you got starter turning over or not? If yes then starting issue is fuel, air or spark

ok thanks,i will give it a go tomorrow night.
I had a look earlier today and took the large cables off and cleaned them up. I couldn't see how the trigger attached, i wasn't sure if it was a spade or a screw of some kind. I've left the van where i had parked it or i'd have a go now. It's one thing after another!

No, maybe i should have worded it better. Turning the key doesn't do anything, all the dash lights etc come on but there's no turning over at all.

Deffo trigger wire to solenoid on top of starter. Normally small-ish red wire with female spade terminal.

Actually l should be more precise. Main wires all go to solenoid. But to the big post with nut. Then spade terminal onto male connector beside it.

Just to update. After lying under the van after work in the pissing rain for two nights I threw the towel in and took it to my local garage. I tried putting 12v directly to it with no joy. I also noticed that the wires to it would have to be replaced and this made my mind up about bumping it and getting rid! I've just picked it up this morning after a new starter and replacement wires. Maybe if it had been the Summer I would have had a go but the weather was grim.

Its expected from a 30 plus years camper van l guess. I also ended up buying new. £230.00 for an auto starter. I was in a rush to get back on road as my daily runner except motorcycle.
In hindsight l should have rebuilt the starter. Very straight forward to do. Least l have a spare auto starter now.
