Sounded fine on start up. Drove a few miles to work and noticed a bit of a rumble as I parked up.

Any suggestions on the cause or strategies for identifying where it's coming from?

Might be worth slipping the fan belt off and checking/turning the water pump as mentioned above and the alternator as well for any odd sounds or movement. Have a look at the fan belt itself - if the v profile is worn and it sits low in the pully that can sometimes set up a resonance. If the belts off it might be worth changing it anyway.
With the fan belt off, and if you're feeling brave, you could run the engine at tickover for a couple of seconds to check if the noise is there or not. Probably best done with a cool engine. Others may have a view about that idea though, but its your choice

Start it up and carefully put the tip of a screwdriver or a piece of hosepipe onto the pump and the other end to your ear. You should hear the bearings making a racket.
