Good evening everybody,

long story short I need somebody to replace the mainshaft bearing in my 5sp box (a bit noisey with the clutch out in neutral, a bit lurchey in lowest gears, also small oil leak from that area). At least I think that's what I need, I'd be more than happy to take the advice of somebody who would be happy working on these if I could find someone! I've tried 4 garages now and all of them are pretty reluctant to do any work to it.

If you know a good gearbox guy in South London or surrounding area who would be up for dropping out my gearbox and doing what needs to be done, I'm all ears.

My alternative, which I also wouldn't really mind doing, would be to drive to somebody somewhere else in the country who's really reputable and get the train back. I wouldn't mind being without the van for a couple of weeks if needs be.

Any ideas?

The gearbox guys are either Aidan or jebiga41. unfortunately neither are anywhere close to London, Aidan works out of Wales and jebiga41 is in Ireland.

They might be able to help or point you in the right direction.

I agree with using the above recommended specialists, however if you are looking for an alternative initial local opinion/discussion, Helical Gearboxes in London SE4 have a good local reputation from friends who have used them for non-VW gearbox and other work (although I haven’t used them personally) so wouldn’t hurt to have a chat with them http://www.helicalgearboxes.com/
