Late Bay CU Type 4 / T25

Hi all, I wonder if anyone with a little more engine knowledge than me can answer a question? I've seen a late bay Type 4 CU air-cooled engine for sale, (I have the same in my van). So apart from the obvious tinware and mounting bars etc, is there any actual difference with the engine itself? I'm asking because I want to eventually upgrade to 2.1 ltr, and could use the bay engine for this, and build it up as and when, then transfer it to my van.

Main difference is the type of engine breather is a removable canister on bay engines and the exhaust ports could be oval or very late bay engines square the same as CU engines, you can't fit CU heat exchangers to oval port engines and you would need the CU fan housing. And the flywheel may only be a 215mm instead of the 228mm CU one

Didn't tappets / camshaft change from solid on the CJ to hydraulic in the CU as well.
Be more ambitious with all the work that is involved and go for a 2.4

Some late Bays had hydraulic tappets as well.

Thanks for the advice all. I haven't managed to speak to the owner as yet, but this is a photo of the engine, I'll hopefully get more info today. What I do know is its a CU code from a late bay, so it depends how 'late' I guess. At the very least I could use it for spares for my current engine. I'll update when I find out more [THUMBS UP SIGN]

I've only recently got my unit so the current CU had to go straight in to the shell to get us up and running. A while back I remember reading a forum where someone had fitted this:

That is not a bay engine, it is from a T25.

At the risk of being wrong again, the CU was only fitted to the T25, so what I think you are looking at is a CU engine fitted in a late bay.

The CU was only fitted to T25's, but still a type 4 engine, (Bay type 4 engines where CJ with solid tappets or GE with hydraulic tappets) and so the CU could be fitted to bays with fitting the tinware, heat exchangers fan housing and alternator from a bay, But that engine has not been modified to fit a bay. The engine bay in a bay van is narrower so that CU engine is too wide.

I'm fine with type 4 engine in the 411 and 412, then the CU, but until now the bay fitting was a complete void for me, I can now see what they looked like and I also found this page

Bang on, Thanks. I did think the same when I saw it. I have know spoken to the owner who's confirmed its a CU, which came from a 1980 T25. It's complete, turns over but hasn't been in a van for two years.It turns over freely and has all ancillarys with it.
I know these engines are robust if well looked after, and having spoke to the person they seem to be genuine.
As the engine is a long distance from where I live, I am getting more photos sent over so I can guage the condition a little better. It's covered 87000 in the same van prior to removal.
I realise it's a vague question, but as I can't see it in person, what are people's thoughts on what I should offer roughly, as the person wants it out of the way?
