Hi,
My local vw garage only fixes old van’s fitted new stainless steel coolant pipe but just had a mot and the guy in the mot centre said that they was being held up by cable ties are they supposed to be properly bracket to the bottom of the van ?

There were & still are no brackets on mine.

Mine are cable tied ( a big one) since the bracket has recently rotted through. Mot in a couple of weeks, wasn't anticipating any trouble for that though. Brickwerks out of stock but it's on my shopping list ..

Nothing shoddy about it, did the van have the correct stainless clips when you took it to the garage? Many vans are now running with zip ties due to the originals having been lost over the years.

It never had the right clips but the money they charge you think they would of done the job properly

In my book tywraps are good for anything up to 100 degrees C that isn't in the catastrophic failure zone. Even fairly small ones can be hard to remove without cutters or a knife. They are ECO wise suspect but cheap as chips (what was ) and rot proof. With a bit of imagination they can get you out of some tricky engineering situations. Now whether having a some long metal pipes together with a cloud of steaming coolant suddenly appear from underneath a van bombing along at a rate of knots is subject to the vagaries of the human mind but the MOT person would seem to have the upper hand on this one barring a brave challenge.

You can get stainless steel cable tie style strips. They seem to use a barbed one way catch. I’ve used them on an exhaust and a Webasto with no problems.

They are hard to twist and very sharp so wear gloves and plan your routes. Bending is fine but any kind of sideways twist is tricky.

Did you make the garage aware that stainless clips are available from one outlet (when in stock)?

Sorry to resurrect a massively old thread - but does anyone have a diagram that shows where the hangers / brackets should be, and how many? My pipes are just cable tied together and hanging loose, which is obviously a terrible idea. There are some brackets on eBay, but I have no idea where the things should be. Mine are plastic pipes, if that means anything.
