Electrical woes - breakdown on holiday

Hi All,
Writing from France, where our 1983 Autosleeper with 1.9 waterboxer broke down last Sunday just outside Caen on day 1 of 2 week holiday. Just going along (a bit hotter than normal tbh - about 3/4 on temp guage) and the engine lost power just like that and finished with a pop. It's turning over at the starter motor but won't fire.

Long story short, it is now with the mechanic in Caen and they replaced the electrical coil after a couple of days waiting for it to arrive, as it was apparently not doing it's job - but the engine still won't start. There is no spark from the plugs.

Any ideas would be gratefully received.
Thanks
Tom

Ignition switch failure is a possibility, it won't pass enough current so try a temporary feed from the stud in the black box or alternator to the coil where the black wire is.

Bad earths is another possibility.

Also could be distributor hall sender but start with the two above.
Testing hall sender

Ignition amp I would say from the description ending in a bang ....

However the bit about engine got hotter and hotter could point at ignition timing moving , or failing dissy.

Hard to say without more details .
