Ok thats the expansion tank and if water is coming out of there then the cap is faulty as there is a valve in the cap that allows water into the top up tank.
available from VW I think

E D I T oops I have just spotted your engine size do you have two tanks?

Caps a possibility, the bottle itself can leak, if the cap is overtightened when hot this can stress fracture the bottle, look fo a couple of small white marks near the shoulder. Drove me mad trying several caps!

yes there is a seal in the coolant level switch

Kev the 2.1 has the same amount of coolant tanks as a 1.9 , 1.6d, 1.6 td

As Mark says the O ring where the sensor goes in has most likely perished, think they are £1.20 at GSF. 902 400 02 seal 24x4 . Make ssure you get the right one as the 3mm one will still leak. Think the part number may be VW and not GSF as it was courtesy of my brother and I'm not sure. It may be worth getting the O rings for your other sensors as well as all mine perished at about the same time, I reckon they were all original so 20 years aint bad. Mine was only weeping slightly and I couldn't bleed the bleeding thing as it sucks air back in. Well spotted bro.

If were on about the same thing it's easy, pull the electrical conector off the sens0r on the tank, and get a 32mm socket ( i think) and you should be able to undo the sensor by hand with no ratchet, replace O ring. Do up hand tight without ratchet. If it leaks after that just nip it up a bit more.

I have had two split on the under side, since replacing my engine, it only leaked when the water was warn and the heat expanded the tank open, replacement part available on the shelf at the local GSF for about £13 inc cap.

yeah mine is doing the same, usually noticable whilst waiting for a parking space at tescos :D, steam rising from the back of the van ;)

I have changed the cap, but still water appears where the sensor is, I think I broke it after not bleeding the water system, when replacing another bit I broke whilst trying to fix something else... if you know what I mean.
