Is it poss to put any 5 speed gearbox (diesel) out of an older transporter (1980 onwards) into a later transporter 1600TD 1989. My code should be ASS but can i have a few different codes which will be ok to put in or does it have to be exactly the same code?...
Thanks

afaik the case of all 5 speed boxes (094) should be the same
check out potential boxes over on the Brickyard

you will need one with similar ratios to the one you are replacing[/url]

i'm the same position as you mate.
Bought a 89 westie in clogville last year with a pants four speed gearbox and want to replace to a five speed.
Not sure of the best way to go about it do i look for a second hand one or a rebuilt one? Does anyone know of a good place that does them?

Careful if you go for a rebuilt one, make sure if poss that they know what they're doing as i bought a 5 speed 'rebuilt' g/box from a 'specialist' called Stu VW at Wymeswold, 300 quid and it jumped out of 5th all the time and rumbled like a bstrd in neutral, breather blocked with silicon, no new seals used etc. etc. got the money back in the end and rebuilt my old one myself, not very easy to do tho, second hand probably best option
