can anybody help been ok no probs , syncro allways a little snatchy on third ,but hey its an old caravelle 86 Aircooled any ideas on easy , fix

get under the bus and see if you can shift it out manually

thanks ,,,,,,got it out of third from underneath . but cant get in ANY gears now totally stiff . (give rod conections a good wd 40 ). Any other ideas from now .ps . gave no signs of anything wrong upto sticking in 3rd no whines or anything ..its allways been slightly notchy on third, synchro since purchase 3 years , just looked on that as normal . slight d/d/clutch sorted that ..

lost all my vw fine friends over the years . i live in bangor north wales all i can ask is normal local never had a Aircooled vw ,machanics here,,,, just simply say get new gearbox ..tut tut . im kinda fkd really...got someone to fit parts if needed and if i knew what was likely to be causing the problem .

chances are it's a broken synchrohub; read your Bentley manual which has all the procedure for the gearbox strip and assembly, parts are available
1986 will be watercooled, unless it's some import brought in 1986 which was registered incorrectly

as Aidan said more than likely 3rd/4th syncro hub thats cracked which means gearbox out and gearbox strip and rebuild

well if it's watercooled converted to Aircooled then it could be a linkage issue as that will have had to be bodged to some extent (creatively reengineered) when the conversion was done

ITS been working ok for 2 years since purchased the van .
think id rather flog it than get so complicated with it .
all my best vw club friends who could take engines out in 35 mins are dead now ,
cant afford to get ripped off by todazed garages.
SAD REALLY spent a bomb on it allready .

mmm yeah the Aircooled gearbox linkage is different tot the watercooled as the gearboxes are different. I'm going through Anglesey on Friday the 28th Boat arrives at 6 am so could have a quick look at it to see if that's what it is? Youlll have to make me coffee though

When fitting an early gearbox into a late van you only need to graft the early rear linkage rod onto the rods that are in place.

i have a feeling i may need a gearbox . so just in case in advance does anyone know vw scrapyard these days . who arnt a ripoff , 86 t25 with replacement air cooled engine .. HELP ... MAY have to sell instead yet ,, spent a bomb on it already over past 2 years ,, thanks dave
