Engine wiring, wires from coil to the carbs etc

Hey all, trying to swap my dvac dizzy for an accuspark one, to connected the red wire to the positive terminal on the coil and the black to the earth, but got no spark can anyone shed any light on what wires should go to where and what coloured wires should I have? The only wire I have going to the positive side of the coil is a green one with a multi plug connector on it, cheers for any advice

It's a good job you mentioned that, especially with your user name.
The CU wiring diagram isn't as readily available as the later WBX models, so try here
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiringt2.php
Because the US went to FI earlier on you might find the earlier wiring diagrams a useful guide - 1973 1700cc is a type 4 engine so has the carb bits, while the 1980 T3 version has the hall effect dizzy bit.
Use them as a guide, and put your van details in your signature, under User Control Panel

No problems I'll have a look over, diesel's my dog, sorry for any confusion, I seem to have my live on the negative side of the coil somehow? Never had any issues with starting until I swapped the distributor, couldn't get my head around how it would still start,i don't get a live to terminal 15 until the engine cranks over, all very strange, the only wiring diagram I have seems to say that the green wire should be on the earth side of the coil

That's fine - there isn't an earth side of the coil. There's terminal 15 from ignition, 1 to the hall sender and 4, the king lead to the dizzy. Terminal 15 should be an ignition live, not only live when the starter is operated.
You need to address that and work out what that means from an accuspark perspective. I would be tempted to restore the original arrangement and make note of the wiring with the engine running before you complicate matters further.

The negative side of the coil has the wires for the carburetors and a fuel pump relay, just a note I've never had a battery warning light on the dash from what I can figure out that is connected to the negative side of the coil as well is that correct?

Take a look at the 1973 wiring diagrams. Additional connections for the chokes and fuel cutoff are on the ignition live side terminal 15 (or +ve if you like). The fuel pump must be an aftermarket addition as the CU had a mechanical fuel pump as standard

Yeah I think it was and add on to be honest there is a relay wired in the engine bay that seems to be wired to the back of the alternator and then off to the coil negative side, I've watched your you tube video and tried to decipher what wires you have going to where, but can't quite make it out, watching you fit the distributor seems very straight forward but nothing ever seems to be with this van[FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY], really appreciate all your input

I think your coil is wired wrong
Positive should have the black wire to it , then feed to solenoids of the carbs etc
Negative side should have just the green wire to the coil/ electricals for distributor
So you accuspark should be wired
Black to where Green wire is ( negative)
Red to where black is ( positive)

That's how I understand it, but why would it run ? only found out because I went to upgrade the distributor, I'll have a play tomorrow night and get back to you all,if someone could explain how the original distributor works with no real issues that would be great, forgive me if I'm repeating myself, so on the +ve side of the coil I should have an ignition feed and the wires to the carburetors and and the -ve side I should just have the one green wire as a standard set-up?

Did you download the diagrams from the Samba and compare what you have to that.....they're in colour for the '73 bus

Yeah had a quick look at the diagrams, I seem to have a sea of black wires, one blue, from the back of the alternator and a green wire on a block connection, all very confusing, especially considering it should be very straight forward [SMILING FACE WITH SMILING EYES]
