Rear Hub Nut Works Loose

Hi guys,

Quick one...

I recently changed the nearside rear wheel bearing and after a tough ordeal I managed to do it.

Today driving around 60 I heard a real drone noise from rear. Got back, lifted tyre and realised there was loads of play in hub. Took pin out and noticed nut was not tight.

How has it got loose, is it because it wasnt tightend enough. Just tried to tighten it and just broken my breaker bar.

Its on tight now, with no play but do i need to replace bearings again?? Why did it come loose?

Need to buy a breaker bar tom, Halfords any good for a half drive bar??

Depends on how tight you did it up, it should be torqued up to 500Nm (50kg @ 1-meter radius). You really need a 3/4 drive bar preferable 1 meter long.

Thanks Big Herb,

Thought I had done it tight.

I have to use the van tom, and I have seen a 3/4 drive 19inch from Halfords. Will it do?

Yes, just double the force needed to tighten. If you weigh 100kg you will be alright.

Personally, I would choose the longer one. Make removing the nut easier as well.
