Gearbox mainshaft end play. 5 speed.

I have a 5 speed gearbox which looks to me as if it may have been reconditioned in its time( code looks as if it has been ground off and re- stamped and there are remains of black paint on the exterior of the case).
With the 1 st/ reverse end case removed I can see that the mainshaft bearing outer race moves about 1-2mm in the bearing carrier when the input shaft is pushed/ pulled by hand . I expect it would get worse if I were to use it like this.
I have a spares gearbox which might yield a good bearing carrier .

Is it possible to swap the bearing carrier without removing the shafts from the gearbox.

no you need to split the box so it needs a full strip down and rebuild also sounds like it needs a Mainshaft bearing retaining plate installed which I can do  send me an email or pm me and can discuss further if you want Paul
