CV joint rebuild question.

I've removed a half shaft to clean and inspect the CV joints before greasing and reinstalling.
However, now I've got it in bits I can't work out the orientation for the inner race and the cage. Both are asymmetric, so I assume there is a right (and wrong) way round to be installed. I've looked in the wiki (couldn't find anything) and some videos on youtube most of which seem to have an inner race with a pronounced step on one face. Mine don't have that so I'm not sure which way round they should be installed.
I've attached a photo of both sides of the inner - one is flatter, the other curves round more gently.
The cage is similar in that one side has flat face and the other has a small chamfer on the inside, though its a small difference and easily missed.

Which way does the flat face go for both the inner and the cage when assembled - facing inward along the shaft or outwards to the wheel/gearbox?
Thanks for any help.

Hmmm, I have been in that position myself.Annoying isn't it.

I "think" that the flat end goes on first and pushes up against the shoulder on the shaft (but I may be remembering the design from other German cars).

That's my vote for your "Ask the audience" lifeline

I am pretty sure this question has come up before - ages ago. Try the search would be my suggestion.

Many thanks for all the replies.

My bad, there is some help in the wiki. I had just gone straight to "Gearbox Clutch CVs Driveshaft" rather than "CV joint repair". That will teach me...
However it doesn't mention the cage orientation and nor does Haynes. Perhaps its less important?

Cheers

Isn't that what is being referred to in the caution box?
