Hi Everybody,

I seem to have a little bit of oil leaking from the rocker covers on my 2.1 DJ. I read somewhere (probably on here) that they can warp a little bit over time and no longer make a good seal around the gasket. Anybody have any thoughts on these:

I like the fact they're stainless, and seem to have little tabs to hold the gasket in place while you put them on. Plus they come with a nice new spring clip that looks really strong. Anybody tried them?

While I'm down there I was thinking of doing some new push rod tubes. Are the telescopic ones ok? I can imagine they don't form as strong a seal as the regular ones, but I don't really fancy removing my cylinder heads to install the normal type.

If I do replace them, do you have any words of wisdom? Never done it before. I'm expecting to crush the old ones (remove the pushrods first, obviously, and keep them in the right order) in order to get them out, then put in the telescopic ones.

these will work just fine for 1/2 the money but if you want the bling look get the scats and some silicone gaskets

yes don't remove a cylinder head unless you really have to

I believe that's for a pair. I didn't realise that the gasket is actually more important - so cork ones not as good as a silicone one I guess. I'm going to get the BW ones and the silicone gaskets, nice one.

Also re: the push rod tubes, the BW ones are £30 each(!) so I think I'll get the Scat ones that come as a set.

Getting push rod back in on left with late coolant pipe and exhaust in the way is tricky and very tight but I managed it on my van.

most of the aftermarket part aren't an improvement on original parts, I would buy 2 rocker cover gaskets and change them and go from there, ive never come across a warped rocker cover from heat, not seen many bent even from levering off, personally I prefer the cork and have fitted hundreds and not had any issues

Even new cork with new cheapo rocker covers and clips can leak. If your old covers aren't holed, you can check the edge for trueness, derust and repaint, and refit with new cork gaskets (dry). If you intend to remove the covers again anytime soon (eg trying various follower settings) go for the silicone ones, but make sure they're clean, degreased and dry before refitting as they can slip when fitting if oily.

I have found the VW covers with a tab and hole are very much better than aftermarket but even so had plenty of leaking new cork gaskets, seems to always be at No3 , I ended up using dirko
