Need some advice after a 13 year absence from the forum!

I joined a long time ago when I lived in England and had a late ex German army doka with a non turbo 1.7 llr Diesel engine.
Lots has changed, I now live in Australia and have found a syncro 17 years after first coming here and trying to find one.
Thing is there was no compression on number 3, I came by a pair of heads with the C suffix, looked broadly the same so I fitted them but there is a valve issue whereby the rocker is pushing the valves down even with the adjusting screws wound right out. Am I missing something or are these just not compatible?

I guess you have a late WBX would be helpful to say

push rod sitting on edge of hydraulic lifter / tappet probably.
I use a USB endoscope to check they are seated.

I'm not really sure what the engine is, I was told it's a 1.9. So they are compatible? So far have done 1 head and all springs are being compressed by the rocker with the adjusters removed?

The existing heads are 025101375, the ones I have found are 025101375C. I've found a thread in technical about it but no definitive answer in if they work of it I've got something wrong?

The early non-suffix heads might well be the small-valve DF items.
What's the engine code? (Not definitive but it all helps)

DF is suffix B. No suffix is usually early DG with the smaller combustion chamber.

I bow to your greater experience, I've done very few 1.9 motors and nothing with the early cooling system!

lucas wrote:Thanks for the reply, the valves were certainly not recessed into the head like the in the picture, I did spend a fair bit of time with the grinding paste ensuring no pitting in the seats so would have sparred this. So it sounds like a follower issue? But all 4? How do I go about confirming/ fixing that?
if the engine is out then get it up at an angle with the head raised and release rocker shaft , the push rods will then sit in the centre of the lifters by gravity and you can check visually with a torch as said.
If it's in the vehicle release the rocker shaft and lift the push rod with a screwdriver as a lever until you feel it seated, fiddly as when one is in the others fall out but can be done with patience.

Guys, done! Thanks for your help. Can't believe it as as simple as the pushrods were not seated in the lifters properly!
All done now, must have missed a plug or something because she's not running well.
There has been an engine change at sometime so not all wiring was connected. Is there a code on the colour of the multi plugs? Ie there is a blue one on the left hand side of the engine I don't know where it goes!
