Was looking on VWHeritage at engines and came across this for a 2.1 D.J.
My question is do they all require 98 Octane? or is this a custom build?

Yes, as it's a HC engine with advance of 10 deg.
97 will do

Ahh ok, but what do you mean by an advance of 10 degrees?
Thinking of visiting Ireland but they only have 95ron, any idea what this would do to the engine?
And additives I could add?

The spark is timed to ignite the fuel at 10 deg Before Top Dead Centre, so the spark is
in advance of top dead centre (piston at the top of its compression stroke)
As the fellas have said.
Retime it to 5 or 8 deg BTDC. With a timing gun.
Then you can run it on 95 ron
Additives are not needed, IMO

Gotcha, it’s safe enough in the long run?

Yes safe.
Although I like the pep of a spec fuelled and timed 2.1

...or fill up with Shell V-Power and enjoy the extra torque

Ah, I never knew that, a bit of reading around tells me that you're a bit stuffed for choice, no Shell at all, no Tesco Momentum or BP Ultimate 102 either ?

What kind of world are we living in! on the lookout for a safe octane booster but most seem to have too many negative side affects when used long term

I used to use a potassium based one, watch out for the marketing, "one point" being 0.1 octane.
I read somewhere that the Millers product is quite good, you might be better doing a DIY blend using AVgas or toluene. Getting hold of the stuff and storing it safely / legally might be a bigger challenge. - I used to have a petroleum storage licence for personal use
I see Circle K also have a 97 product

Another vote for the Millers. I include a bottle of this for the customer if I upgrade a van to DJ power, and it still has half a tank of 95.
