Hi all

Have been checking bangs, rattles etc whilst driving over bumps and could hear something that I thought was the steering. Have got under the van whilst someone rocked the steering wheel from side to side and all the steering bushes are good. What I have noticed though is that rocking the steering wheel side to side replicates the 'clunk' I can hear when driving over bumps and is coming from the steering box

Is it normal the steering box 'clunks' slightly when quickly rocking the steering wheel from side to side or does this indicate that it is worn? Not really familiar with steering boxes so not sure if this is normal ie clearance within the box

I suspect there should be next to no play at all if you can rock one shaft independently of the other then it’s worn I don’t know if it’s a repair or replace item though. This is based on steering play in the rack would cause concern on test

There is no independent movement between the shafts as such it's just the quick change in direction causes a clunk in the steering box. All the other steering components, rack, bushes there is no sloppiness so just need to verify if the box is worn. Anyone elses van clunk when turning sterring side to side when not moving?

Have you checked the collapsible part on the column? If this has come away you may get metal to metal and a clunk. The bevel boxes are fairly bulletproof to my knowledge.

Yeah I have checked that. Tiniest bit of sloppiness. If I 'rattle' the steering wheel up and down then that collapsible section does move slightly. May need to check it again.

sounds like maybe dash has been out and steering column wasn't properly set up when refitting dash
check also both rubber bushes present where the upper and lower parts of column engage with the pins

...and its called a steering *relay* box.
