Is it possible to set the timing on a 1.9 dg by ear or is that an urban myth?

yes, its possible but it'll still really need checking

you should be able to time it by eye without starting the engine enough to get it to start by aligning the mark on the dissy with the rotor arm in cylinder one at tdc

- Timed mine by sight & ear and it did run pretty well but had a timing light on order anyway as have always borrowed in the past. When I checked it wasn't far off but now have the peace of mind its timed up correctly. This is all the more important if you are then going on to make any carb adjustments.

I recentlly bought a timing light, £17.00 works great. Setting timing by ear, the post reminded me of days long gone by of tuning minis on the farm, we used to take the bonnet off sit on the wing and rotate the distributor whilst being driven along until lt ran the best, don't try this at home!!.

That remended me of car surfing in the outback of Australia, been on the bonnet at 60mph holding onto the windscreen wipers...ahh those were the days
