Hi,

Does anyone know a good, reliable, trustworthy welder in the north east (around Newcastle or Durham) with T25 experience?
Just about every panel on my '82 Aircooled chassis needs some attention, so it's quite a big job.
I've spoken to a few people, but they don't seem to want to take on a long term project.
The timing is up to them as I'm not in a hurry.

The van is fully stripped and ready for blasting and then hopefully straight on to fabrication after that.
Hope someone can help.

I haven't had any work done by him but he was recommended to me.

Ask for Dan, tell him the recommendation came from Jamie at Merc-Spec (that's not me)

After searching the internet they were one of the first garages I tried a few months back.
I emailed them, twice. They never replied.

I called him to have a chat - he answered the phone straight away. Do you want me to PM you his mobile ?

Andy, the problem with "specialised" work is that the people who are genuinely good don't need to advertise. I have a rusty old van which I love and have spent disproportionate amounts on.
I have been let down and ripped off by "welders" twice.
You are better off spending your money on tools and having a go.
You can't really make it much worse.
Measure twice, measure again, take pics then cut.
It gets easier after a few mistakes.

You know Andy, I agree with George. But I would, given my ‘88 is probably like yours.

The benefits to doing it yourself - you know what has been done, and to what standard, before the filler and paint goes on
It’s cheaper
It can be satisfying

The downside - it takes ages. Well, for me anyway, fitting it round family and work.

Downsides of paying someone - you don’t have much control over how it might turn out, it’ll cost, and you can’t predict what will happen with your welder person.

Maybe I’m a control freak...

It is hard finding a welder you can trust so have a go yourself if you think your confident enough,the hard part is the fabrication,buy decent equipment mine cost around £1200 for everything I need .

I would love to give it a go myself.
My issue is space.
The van is on a gravel drive with about a foot clearance around each side.
I’m not sure if I’d have enough room, plus it’s outside.
I have a cover for it, but if it rains mid-weld, it would rust and I’d get electrocuted, which might spoil my day.

Why do we do these things?
Why can’t we stop?

Decision made.
I'm going to do it myself.

Good decision! (Anyone who’s prepared to do this has made a good decision - but do try to create some shelter)

This is what I use, seems stable enough at the lowest setting for welding thinner metal. And can be wound up plenty for thicker stuff.
