So my thoughts are to change my 1.9dg tired engine to-

One thought is Diesel. Better return on mpg with maybe a golf? 1.9/2.1tdi but can’t seem to find anyone local who fills me with confidence to do the work.

Change it to a 2L Subaru engine and maybe see 10mpg more/gallon. This works our at £3500ish and repays me in fuel in 8years [FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY]Suffolk based company TSR.

2.1dj engine if I can find a good one?

Or rebuild my 1.9dg

I’m going crazy thinking about this but I want to get it sorted for when the day comes. I’m not doing the work myself, I don’t have time. I want to get it right but I feel I have massively over thought this (or not). Thoughts please. Live in Essex and do about 8k/year at 21mpg it’s begging to hurt.

LPG?

Whats wrong with the DG?

The local garage to me is 73p/l and it seems to be fading out? I am also a little reluctant to loose my spare wheel as I have no where else to put it. Have toiled with the idea of putting the tank in the van but would loose too much space. Have young kids and love good food, then no space for food, beer or wine if the tank is inside. This then makes me think camping without a fire or something to dull the senses may not be so kind on me?!?!? We do a lot of trips and I think we need the space? However I will be building the back cupboard bigger so may then be able to. Can’t get the wheel on the back as have bikes, and don’t really like the look. Have thought about the roof but now have a super Viking so there is a lot of weight to lift. Ideas welcome though.

8 years payback on any T25 investment is too long you have no way of knowing if any engine will last that long and these numbers are assuming a much better mpg which may not be realistic.

Diesels are horrible and smelly


you forgot to say whats wrong with the DG other than mpg.

Sounds like £3,500 for a decent DG rebuild or £3,500 for a non rebuilt scooby.

Do you want to keep the van original, will you get the MPG you desire ???

I agree don’t like diesel either but is so much petrol really better? My dg is just getting old, nothing other than a few water spots on the casing and 135k on the clock. It’s well looked after. I bought the petrol version because of the vdub twang. I’m happy with the 1.9 but desperately need more mpg. Of course I would like to keep it original but.....! Where else can I put an lpg tank other than cupboard or spare wheel holder?

Lpg it and wait is my reccomendation
put the lpg in the spare wheel position
I doubt you are doing 8k camping so when not camping wheel in van
when camping wheel can be fitted to a tow bar mounted bracket or bike rack


Or just don't carry a spare

Has to be another dg it’s my favourite engine in the t25 by far. My other friends have 1.6 and 2.1 and both prefer the dg. We had this problem a few months ago when we thought our engine was dead we decided to stick with the dg and found one for £500 on eBay ready to go. Not sure about Subaru engines but someone once described them as chocolate engines as they always have problems and there as much good as a chocolate teapot, this is not my opinion by the way I have no idea what there like . Dg for us though

Have thought of that. Would it work with a blow out? I had a puncher on the main road in France 2yrs ago and would have been in big trouble without a spare. But that was my first puncher in about 8 yrs.

A subaruin wont get 10mpg over the DG, that engine in a Legacy only makes 25mpg in the real world, wont get better in a 2ton brick.

I'd say go the full house 2.1 on injection, a fresh one is a torquey revelation if you are used to the 1.9

I want to pull out my hair (if I had any left). Going to the garage on Saturday to talk lpg. If I then gti or 2.1 it then I assume the 2.1 lpg system stays the same but gti needs redoing? I do like the 1.9 and though more ooomf would be good but I’m cool with the slow plod. I think I’m talking my self in to a corner here? What mpg do you see on a gti?
