Low tick over speed

1984 Holdsworth 1.9 petrol pop top
Hi All
Good day you all, and hope you all had good summer(although it appears not to be over yet)!
I am after an opinion from you experts on here please, as agree a great forum.
Am going away next week and went for a short drive and fill up, and on initial starting was fine as usual, however on restart and driving away van kept stalling. Noticed that the tick over revs are really slow and van constantly stalls, it is a pain, as when you drive up to a junction or change gear too slowly the revs die and engine stops so have to restart again.
Seems to drive ok when going, this has never done this before and have since re-started and again seems not to keep on choke i.e. higher revs and if left barely ticks over and stops.
I would greatly appreciate any thoughts/ remedy for this.
Any many thanks for any feed back / opinions etc on this please.
Regards
LLoyd

Hi Lloyd.

Couple of things you could check:

1. The idle screw on the carb. It's about in the middle as you're looking at it from the back of the van. Screw it in to up the revs with a flathead screwdriver.

2. Breather pipe: the s shaped one that runs from the carb pancake to the oil breather tower. These collapse or get funked up over time so could be time to replace.

3. Air filter: when was it last changed!

4. Earth points and electrical connections: could need cleaning up with a wire brush or connections replacing.

These are easy things to investigate but for more info refer to the wiki (link up in the top bar) or ask here again!

I had a similar problem last year. It turned out that the vacuum hoses around the carb were perished causing air leakage. I bought a length of hose for about £2, replaced the four bits of hose and the problem was sorted all thanks to Mocki's advice.

leave the idle screw to last if this hasn't happened previously!

Check for air leaks with WD 40 around the carbs..if the revs pick up...you have an air leak :-)

The joys eh?

You have some good pointers already, I had a similar issue on my van earlier this year, on a Weber. the jets needed cleaning.

Hi Guys
Many Thanks for the replies, I am going away tomorrow in the van for a week and did not have a lot of time to remedy fault.
The solution was the carb idle jet blocked, which has been cleaned etc and is now working fine.
