Flashing temp light but gauge ok

Quick question. I've googled this but have come up with a number of possible answers.
Sat in traffic. Temp needle went up a bit and fan cut in intermittently. Started moving and red light started flashing after needle returned back to the middle. Any ideas? Was going to wait for it to cool and check the level, google search suggests my coolant needs topping up. Not done this before as I've always had Aircooled!
I did have a quick look earlier and the sensor in the header tank by the dalek cap seemed wet when I popped the connector off, I dried it, assuming that the water was shorting across the two pins.
Looking online again, is it simply a case of topping up the water/coolant?

Went through the same process on my first WBX drive. The flashing light indicates low coolant level. Top it up and all will be fine. It's in the drivers manual too, I did RTFM the second time

And a proper noob question but want to check.
I fill by taking off the dalek cap?

Nope, fill the reservoir to top up, header tank only if it's very low.

Yeah, they're complicated until you get to know your way round.
Do download & read the manual- you may have to top up the header tank too, can depend how long its been stood.

Ok, I bought it off a pal who decided to sell because he's simply not been using it enough

As 937carrera says, if the header tank is low (low enough for the prongs of the sensor to be high and dry above the coolant) it might be better to remove the dalek cap and top up the header tank directly. It should be brim full. Coolant is only drawn in from the reservoir when the system cools down after being pressurised (and even then, only if you have an airtight system), so it could take several cycles to refill the header tank and get the prongs into the coolant again. A good starting point is a cool, de-pressurised system, with the header tank brim full and the reservoir filled to the low mark.

There are two conditions that trigger the LED:-
A) low coolant, once the LED is triggered it will not stop flashing untill the ignition is switched off. If the coolant level is not topped up then the LED will start to flash about 30 seconds after the engine is re started.
B) Overheating, but when the coolant temp returns to normal the LED will stop flashing (You do not need to switch the ignition off unless you want the engine to cool down).

Just been and checked my levels.
Top up tank is to the line, header tank is to the brim.
I popped off the dalek cap and blew in it. There was resistance but I managed to blow water through.
I noticed the sender was wet by the dalek cap again. Does this have a seal or rubber washer on it? Perhaps this is my fault?

Been out and about this morning. All fine.
Weird. I'll just keep my eye on it

There is an o-ring seal where the sender screws into the tank. if you're seeing water in the electrical terminals then the sender likely has internal cracks, not uncommon. New senders are cheap and come in two types, with a clip-on or push-on wiring plug.

Mine's a push on type. I'll get one ordered up.
Euro or Brickwercks?
