Wheel bearing help, My brain has disolved!

Need brains for rear wheel bearing issue.
I got an advisory on one rear wheel bearing having excessive play. Didn't have to do it for the mot test but thought what the hell, get it done while overhauling the brakes.
Re test tomorrow, test up next week and holiday Friday so have to sort quick.
Replaced the bearings in the usual fashion as I've done loads of times before. Torqued up ( 12 stone of me, at three feet of scaffold bar). Test drive and it's making a horrible scraping sound ( drum on back plate) with any amount of left turn. i stopped twice and re-tightened hub nut more (4 feet). Got home and jacked it up again and there's tons of play, and no amount of tightening will sort it.
I can see movement between inner and outer race of the outer bearing but no more than the old one. I'll strip it back down in the morning but any advice would be welcome.
Oh yeah carrier checked for being oval and was within a few hundredth of a mill as far as my equipment ( vernier) can tell, and play is right round the clock.
I just can't think why it could be worse with fresh bearings.
