Where have you fitted your oil temp senders?

Bought a vdo oil temp gauge and pod. I want to fit a corresponding sender but for acurate results the sump to me doesn’t seem the best idea as you have no idea what your heads etc are running at where it matters most. Admittedly the oil temperature will give you a better understanding than nothing at all. Any advice cunning ideas would be appreciated [THUMBS UP SIGN]

Something I found earlier today and posted in BigBadBob76's thread, another option, but probably more suited to the WBX rather than air cooled unless you want to add the DOPS functionality.
Itchyfeet has done a fair bit of work on oil pressures / temps

How about a combined pressure / temperature sender, available with 6 bar range, operating temp -50 to 150 deg C, details of the electrical response in the datasheet.
Put this in place of the low switch, feed your gauges direct and have a simple bit of electronics to provide another feed for the idiot light (or even DOPS functionality as well).
The only issues I can see is that the thread is M8 x 1, so you would need to use an M10 x 1 adapter, and perhaps price
On Aircooled the other approach is to fit a cylinder head temperature sender

Thanks, as for the thermocouple again I don’t like where it’s reading the head could be well over temp and by the time all the oil in the sump has heated up it’ll be too late. That’s my theory anyway. And cheers carrera both are good ideas, I’ve also thought about the oil filter header as atleast that would give a far more direct reading with less time to alter more theory’s haha

Hello,
I'm guessing an Aircooled....
Dip stick test....Hot but not Hurty..
Neither CT nor CU have drillings as standard for cylinder head temp gauge.. don't need..
The speedo is marked with gear change red dots..so no rev counter needed..
Air-Cooled Bliss..

Have a look at BBB's thread - he's looking at using a sandwich plate to mount the sensors, the WBX oil filter housing is different to the a/c so you would need to check that the components fitted.

You do of course have a proper engine oil cooler fitted, is there some particular reason why you are concerned about a CU engine overheating, or have you been spending too much time on American hot rod bug sites ?

Way too much time over the years, but that’s the next project [THUMBS UP SIGN] after or possibly before getting a 2.2 built for this van

As Carrera said, I'm planning on fitting one of these to my DG and fitting temp sender and pressure switch to it.
It's a compromise between sump plug sender (which I fear will get knocked and damaged) and Itchyfeet's sender (which means you lose the filler tube and have to lift the engine cover to top up your oil. not always easy when the van is full of camping gear/wife/dog etc)
If you can wait a week or two I'll report back on how it goes.
