I fitted a golf sterling wheel in mine. Had to adapt (extend) the indicator cancellation notch. With a small steering wheel it certainly helps to have PAS.

There's already a brilliant thread which 100% describes fitting a mk1 golf steering wheel with photos and all bits required.
You'll need to buy a few 3mm hex pegs but all this is in the thread.
I fitted on a few weeks ago after following the thread and its 100% bang on.

Thanks for replies, looks like the mk2 Gti steering wheel I bought is the larger spline so would require an adapter.

May I’ll Ebay it and buy a Mk1 wheel at some point
