Am pretty sure this has been on here before but i cant find it!!
When stopped at lights/junction i have to select second gear before being able to go in to first.
as i remember being mentioned there is an adjustment that needs to be made on the selector rod that goes the length of the vehicle. How is the adjustment made.
Anyone else have this problem????????????

second gear before being able to go in to first.

Err, no.

Dunno what the problem is but its not how its meant to be!

My 'van engages 3rd and 4th-to-first (at a low enough road speed, I hasten to add, could this be your problem? First won't engege unless your going slow enough as my missus found out slowly from driving my Golf!!)

Think you misunderstand me. If the van is rolling to a stop then no problemo you can get first. But if your stopped, it wont go in till you select second and then throw it forwards to first. I would hope no vehicle would go in to first whilst movin!

Ahh, gotcha! By second I misunderstood and possibly thought you were using 2nd gear to slow the van till it reached a speed suitable for first. Some cars and stuff will engage first whislt moving, just moving very slowly.. Unless its a poo 60's MG with a crash first gear

what monkey nut s says, but I'd posit that the gearbox is tired and the wear on the syncro rings such that the ring or the change gear itself on the gear you are having problems with is pretty worn, and moreso than it's opposite pair, hence the need to select the other one first, which aligns both of them . Most of our vans are 100k miles plus, beyond design life and worn, just be gentle with them, maybe treat them to a fluid change, inspect the drain plug debris while you are at it, generally furred to the size of your little finger is normal for age, but big bits are not to be expected.
