Spare Wheel Holder Removal?

I'm trying to remove the spare wheel holder.
I've removed the R type clips from the ends of the rods that the holder pivots on and I was expecting the rods to push out through the hinges.

I've tried tapping the rod end with a hammer, but they won't budge. Have they seized or am I missing something obvious?
Andy.

It's probably just rust. Leave some penetrating oil to soak and try tapping in as well as out.

So it does come apart in that way then?

Never done it, but have just looked under my project van and that's what it looks like to me.
Also try a pry bar between the rod and the plate welded to the cross piece.

Yeah, tried that already. I'll just keep adding penetrating fluid and keep on tapping. I starting using a bigger hammer put the end of the shaft starting folding over. 33 years of rust to free up.

Heat would be the next obvious choice, but I wouldn't be keen on a naked flame near that close to the petrol tank
Have you removed the spare wheel already, does moving the base of the wheel holder help (maybe the pin is not round / has a flat on it)?

Great. I've just put some more pentrating fluid on and I'll try knocking them out again tomorrow. I thought the front of the bars would twist out from the chassis as Simon mentions, and they move already at that end so no problem there.
See how tomorrow goes.
Thanks again.

that's why they invented pin punches with flat ends, pick one of smaller diameter than the pin

then whack it hard with a lump hammer
if needs be make up something to hold the punch central like a piece of rubber hose

Ok. But if my next post is from A&E with smashed knuckles, that's on you.

You've done this sort of thing before, haven't you.

No point in working underneath if you can't get a nasty gash, rust in your eye, or an earhole full of grease when you unbolt a CV joint. Or all three if you're a hardened owner

All done.
Couldn't get a good swing using the pin punch so I got a 2' long (16mm dia) bar and hit it with a bigger hammer from outside of the wheel holder. Still took some effort to get them moving.
Wore safety glasses. Still got rust in the eye.
Thanks for everyone's advice.
