Hi Guys,

Been a while since I posted on here I haven't had the van out for a while, so I want to give it a full check over before the good weather kicks in as I'm missing camping badly!!

I've bought myself a timing strobe as I've never checked the timing since I've had it, but wondered if someone could shed some light on where it should be timed to on the scale, its running twin Webber carbs so the one vac line is disconnected from the vac advance, I think this is correct? The other port on the vac unit is connected via a T piece to the two carbs

According to Mr Haynes:

7.5 degrees BTDC if it's got points with vacuum disconnected or 5 degrees ATDC with vacuum pipe connected and idle stabilisation plugs connected together.

Retimed mine a couple of weeks ago, it has electronic ignition with lots of air intake bits missing while it is a project, set it to 7 degrees BTDC idle plugs connected. Better idle, better throttle response than before so good enough for me, even though it isn't going anywhere.

I'll be honest mine is a bit of a project too, had the engine out end of last year, rebuilt heads new piston rings every gasket but didn't touch the dizzy as I had no way of setting the timing. It has always seemed a bit underpowered so I'm hoping it will run a bit better after setting the timing correctly. Then on to the bodywork!!

More important to check the maximum advance, with distributor vac pipes disconnected, no more than 32 deg @ 3500 rpm that should equate to 7.5 deg at idle.

Awesome cheers big herb, I've only got a cheap strobe gun though it doesn't have a reading for rpm I guess its just a bit of guesswork there without a tach?

At some time you are going to need one, these are one of the best automotive meters (multimeter with rpm and dwell).

But basically, rev the engine until the timing stops advancing then check it.

Awesome that looks like a good bit of kit I could do with in my toolbox anyway, will defo invest in one for 15 quid! I'm going to need a multimeter at some point anyway to tackle the birdnest of electrics inside!!

That will help me immensely, Its good to be able to watch someone doing it as I'm doing the job myself so I can compare. Hopefully will get some time on the weekend to get it done.
