Tuning 1.9 petrol

Being a mechanical nonce at times, can anyone advise me on tuning a 1.9 petrol. at the moment it starts easily and runs quiet and smooth, but it seems to run better when the engine is cold than it does at normal running tempreture, and when i turn off i get a little run on and fuel smell when its hot, like its running too rich.

If it's a single carb - to check the choke operation, take off the air filter housing (black plastic box) so you can see into the carb and start it from cold. The choke flap at the top of the carb should be closed or nearly closed on a cold start i.e. letting in as little air as possible. As the engine warms, the flap should open slowly. Suspect this is the same for the solex/other twin carbs, but I've got no direct experience of them. If the thing satrts well and runs well seems likely that timimg is at least ok. Petrol smell and overrun suggest fuel rather than timing problem to me though others here may know much better.

Some time after I got my van I discovered that the choke flap had been completely removed, worth checking.

Good luck
