Are those short lengths pipe replaceable or do they come with the injector? and whatever the answer what have fellow WBX'ers done about it?

Yes you can cut the short lengths that go from the rail to the injectors off and replace with new hose and good clamps. Just don't score the plastic rail with a knife, and don't crack it in two when you twist it off

Use the proper Oetiker clamps to secure the hose tails to the injectors too

I prefer screw clamps
there is just the reassurance that you can check them

Thanks for that folks I should have asked the consensus on Ethanol resistant fuel pipe suppliers while I was at it. But got preoccupied with that ridiculously inadequate looking retaining ring thing on the injector end of the pipe.
Although I had a "Now the biting makes sense" moment when I saw the side cutters nibbling away at it in the attachment photo
Got to admit that taking the bull by the horns so to speak when taking the engine out to attack that water pump and stripped exhaust thread plus the wealth of forum help available has kind of kindled a bizarre feeling bordering on fondness for this initially mysterious engine.

FWIW the barbs on the injectors (two) are ferocious when compared to the single barb on the fuel rail spigots, I doubt that the clips are needed at all!
But Bosch put them on all the early "tailed" injectors so best to do the job properly.
With the correct clips

Always use the ethanol resistant hose, not the old-spec cheap stuff that will perish in weeks...
