How big (expensive) a job is it to get the valve seats repaired/replaced on a 2.0 litre Aircooled engine?

There's a decent amount of work involved.

Why do you think it needs doing, is this arising from your "engine stalling" problem ?

Yep, spoke to the garage this morning properly and he said there was a problem with the valve seats

Oh dear, a bigger problem than hoped for. Do you know how they diagnosed it, compression test or leak test. If you can post the compression results then I'm sure people will chime in.

Has this happened suddenly or has it gradually being getting worse ?

We only just bought it a month ago, gutted!

If you don't already have a trustworthy VW garage with Aircooled knowledge then you probably need to be finding one. It would be helpful if you could put a location in your profile and the van details in your signature, then people can help you more.

Took it to another garage who work on Aircooled engines, they have said the idle air cut off valve needs replacing, they never mentioned valve seats so got my fingers crossed that's all it is!
