Anyone know why my engine might be stalling on hills and not wanting to start up again?! When it finally does start up again it splutters and splurts until it gets to the top and then is ok again once on flat.

1.9 DG 1987 T25

I think I'd be looking at the carb and/or fuel pump. Check there's enough fuel getting to the float chamber & also check the pump is working correctly. How does it run when you put your foot down on the flat?

The carb has only just been rebuilt so hoping it's not that! Will have a look at that and the pump though. When I put my foot down on the flat it runs like a dream!

Has it only just started since the carb was re-built?

pretty steep, about at 15% incline maybe 20%

Yeah it's just started doing it since the rebuild. It's going back into the garage for some brake work so I'll ask them then about it but I just like to get an idea of what it might be first

A whiff of nostalgia:
About sixty years ago I used to have this problem on Chatham hill on expeditions to the New Forrest from London in a Fordson E83W quaintly called a Shooting Brake.
The solution was to get one of my team to give the fuel tank mouth to mouth respiration while another spun the engine frantically with the starter handle.
I later determined that the engine mounted fuel pump became too hot on the climb up the hill which resulted in vaporization. This could be overcome by the combination of the slight pressure in the fuel tank together with the delay due to stopping thus enabling the pump to draw on fresh cool petrol and allow us to proceed. Of course this did require the emergency starting team to jump aboard rapidly or be left behind.
I am NOT recommending this as a present day activity merely adding it for interest.

Sounds tired pump related. Or too small jet?
