Hi All,
I ran out of fuel today, bloody dodgy fuel gauge, but that's for another post.... but anyway, chucked in a gallon and now she's running rough, missing and backfiring on de-acceleration. I've had her run out many a time without a problem but this time she's broken, any pointers?

What does the fuel filter look like, probably picked up crap from the empty tank?

It has been replaced recently, its an opaque plastic one but you can see that there is a little black sediment in it.

As expected, I think I have crud from the tank in the carb, took off the fuel pipes leading to the carb and cranked the engine a few times and there are rusty deposits in the fuel, I tried the old hand over running carb method to "pull" the crap through, this seemed to work for 200 yards of driving but now its back to running rough, next job is to lift off the tops of the carbs, does anyone know what I can do without a full stripdown, I have only recently overhalled them and don't fancy doing it all again

IIRC.There is a filter in the carb.(Mines an injection) Have you cleaned this?

?? No, didn't realize that there was one on the solex's, where might she be?

I have read there is a filter on the fuel inlet side of the carb.Not sure if this is the case on the solex.Carbs are a black art to me.

In view of the fact you have recently fitted a new fuel filter, this shouldn't be happening, unless that new filter is faulty.

That was also my thinking, although they were a cheap two pack from ebay, but you'd still expect them to work!
I have the inlaws over for Easter Lunch later, gonna try and make excuses and get out there for a bit and crack off the tops of the carbs, to see whats in there, kinda hoping that there is a whole load of rubbish in there so that I know where my problem is!

If there are rusty deposits in the tank you would be best to buy a new tank and filler neck etc, the carbs will need cleaning out, it only takes a bit of crud stuck in them to cause problems, and get that bloody fuel gauge problem sorted !

The way I read it is that the filter was fitted before the van ran out of petrol, is this correct? If so, it'll need changing probably now that it's had a load of crud pulled into it. You say that you've ran out of fuel several times, perhaps a change of practice is required.

Further to Rob's comment .., take off the IN pipe to the Pierburg and gently screw a screw into the end of the pipe and gently pull back and a plastic cone filter should come out ... wash it out with petrol or WD40, replace, replace fuel lines unless brand new in which case wash out and refit.

OK folks, can I throw this into the conversation.
I have often thought that so many folks get this wrong, but maybe I'm missing something ->


The open end of the feed pipe in the tank sits very close to the lowest part of the tank doesn't it (obviously).
Now, consider the van has say 4 gallons of fuel in it, and it has been stood for a week, any sediment etc will have sunk to the bottom of the tank.
On starting it up, the pipe sucks and any muck is sucked up and gets caught in either the tank gauze filter, or the main fuel filter.

Now consider a situation were the van is driving along and there is barely any fuel left and it, then it runs out.

What's the difference?

It doesn't matter whether there is 4 gallons or just 1/2 a pint, the sediment is always going to be concentrated at the bottom, were the feed pipe is, surely.
