1600 Aircooled CT engine...cut out, then runs irratically.

How do, my van started fine. Drove off got a few minutes down road and then just died. Lack of revs, no response when pumped accelarator. This was at 5.30 on a friday evening. Seems there was no fuel getting to carb. AA came and assumed it was fuel pump.

6 hours later a tow truck came. [FEARFUL FACE][FEARFUL FACE]

At home replaced fuel pump and got van running. However Idle is very erratic and then engine just cuts out. Seems to be when warms up and choke begins to switch off.

Any ideas, thoughts would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

P.S. bin off AA as six hours is ridiculous need not be discussed. [FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY][FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY]

Yeah...that crossed my mind too. Will change it tomorrow. Was actually thinking why not take it out and join pipes. Then put a new one in the engine bay. My van has a metal floor guard that you have to drop (a lot of bolts) to look at the filter. It would be much easier to get to and look at if it were in the ehgine bay.

I guess downside would be if it leaked it would be on a hot engine. Is that why they put it there in the first place?

Bought a carb rebuild kit...in case there is dirt in carb. Guess filter first, and if that cures it....job done. [GRINNING FACE WITH SMILING EYES]

Don't want it in the engine bay. Best where it is :ok

Should be an inline filter after the fuel tank.

Many thanks for the link. Sure it will be very handy if I jave to strip down carb. [WINKING FACE]

Hello again. Changed the fuel filter....the plastic fuel line that joins to the rubber tube section that fits onto the filter was cracked and broke off. This could be part of the problem.

Fixed that.

Primed the new fuel pump with petrol and filled up the carb reservoir. Van started up first time. Still running rough when choke disengaged.

Went round the vacuum pipes. The rubber tubes are all original and pretty perished. Replaced all rubber tubes so no leaks.

Run engine again and now idling much smoother. Have driven it about and not cutting out anymore.

One thing though.....if van standing still and rev it hard...the revs pick up and race. However, instead of holding a constant high rev it sort of pulses. I think it called hunting, but may of made that up. [FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY]. Is this a sign of a manifold/ air leak when engine under high revs?

Many thanks.
