Help please in the Midlands. Beer tokens provided.

Help wanted midlands area. Off to Europe in the van next week but it’s running pants. I think timing is out and idle needs adjustment. Have just had it at a mechanics and not happy. Want to just do it myself (well with your help-have no timing gun). I can donate beers. In Worcester tomorrow morning, Ludlow until Saturday and Shrewsbury over weekend. Anyone? Hoping for a hobby mechanic to show me what to do rather than pay a mechanic to do it wrong again. 2.0 Aircooled motor.

Hello,

Timing gun is €30

A video to help..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkyBAMMHpa4" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you have the original DVDA ignition(2 spigots on dizzy capsule).. you set at 6deg AFTER tdc....(the white dot I show in the vid.)

Free tune up and diagnosis for all air cooled visitors.. :)

Get it running right before you set off..even fit new dizzy and coil..

Cordialement,

:ok

Thanks Sarran.

That was helpful. I watched that one and the carb one. If only you were a bit closer it would be great to use your knowledge on my van.

Booked in at Marios in Telford on Monday to try to sort it. I think it’s a combo of poorly timing, badly adjusted carbs and a bit of wear.

Really hard to find the timing mark in my van, will try your technique.

Cheers
Josh

Hello,
No problem... :)

Here are 2 quickies..

Valve timing..Ignition timing..adjust carbs..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsfo5ATgBp0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

et voila....

Note, this was set up with a 2nd hand SVDA dizzy (points and condensor) on an early engine , as the young couple touring Europe had a very poor start to their holiday.....
Here is the timing set up:

You're welcome to pass by..(20 mins from motorway A89-E70, jn 22)..

Hope this helps,, :)

Hi,

Could stuck or badly adjusted hydraulic lifters cause it to run so poorly? I have never in my 3years of having it reset them. What’s the tried and tested method? What symptoms would I have?

Thanks
Josh

Symptoms are very noisy.
As you have not remarked on a hell of a racket coming from the middle of the engine yours are ok.
They are self adjusting.

Hello,

Hydraulic lifters.. setting is a bit different.. :)

This is what blocked hydraulic tappets sound like..

If you are going on a ramp, it will do no harm to remove the rocker boxes and give a good clean.

You will need new rocker cover gaskets..

Perhaps check the CV joints and bolts..and change the gearbox oil..and check fuel line, filter and rubber tubes..

Remember... valve timing (preload), ignition timing, adjust carbs..
