As part of my roof/windscreen renovations by local VW garage, they have asked me to remove the headlining prior to the welding work being done.

Are there any tricks and tips for this ? Any help much appreciated.

You'll need the windscreen out (if it's not already) as the headliner is glued to the body under the rubber seal.
Along the top of the doors you have to gently lift the metal fingers that clamp the liner in place.

I can't remember how it is further back but I suspect the sidewindow rubbers are involved.

You have to pull the window out to remove the front section. After that you remove the visors and mirror and the front lip can folded back. It should be enough to cut/weld/paint the edges.

This will have to be done when the windscreen comes out.
What is actually underneath the lining, is it some sort of frame ?

Underneath the lining you have metal rods that span across the roof, these keep the lining nice and taught and therefore giving it a nice look.
Underneath the lining and rods is normally a bit of wadding for sound proofing and the roof.
