Rebuild queries with pics. Gearbox and engine DG 1900 w/c

Hoping someone may know the answers to these two.
Im rebuilding my DG 1900 watercooled T25 and when I cleaned up the outside of the gearbox it was coverered in crud which was effectively baked on oil and dirt. It was only at the mounting end, ie: front end of gearbox.
Two questions re this pic:
Image
'A' shows a little hole, but what's it for?
'B' shows part of the line of a bolted together joint which I presume has a gasket between? Has it got a gasket and how easy is this one to replace? I dont want to undo the bolts and be left with a pile of cogs!

Also:

When the black water pipe is push into the aperture in the water pump (sorry Aircooled buffs...!) should there be an o ring or similar here? Cant remember if there was when I took it apart, but surely......?

Thanks everyone :D

imho don't remove the end cover on the gearbox unless you have the bentley manual and can see exactly what's going on in there - it's best to have it mounted vertically when working on the box. The oil will have been coming out of the breather pipe outlet not the gasket anyway so unless you are planning a rebuild of the box leave well alone.
The seal for the water pipe is N 028 225 2 about a quid from your local dealer

The end of the gearbox can disentergrate too with corrosion so unless you know what ya doing i'd personally leave it....

In behind that cover is only the reverse gear and its selector. Nothing to worry about. So if you do need to replace a gasket or something, upend the box and feel free to remove the cover - yes you will need a new gasket.

It is actually worth a look in there because the selector rods run within linear bearings and they can fall out / apart.

Two or three of them can clearly be seen under that cover.

If they are there and in good nick then leave them alone, Mine had one missing which I discovered when I drained the gearbox oil one day - its was stuck to the magnet.

They can be replaced without having to strip the box if your VERY carefull.

The hole is just a vent for the gearbox nothing to worry about.

Just to back-up what SplendiferousII has already said, your quite safe to remove that part of the box, its the gear shift housing... I had mine apart today.

From there you can also see the state of the main shaft bearings... then again what you don't know can't hurt you
