Hi

My random fuel gauge and a manic week has caught me out and I ran out of fuel this morning, luckily just outside my home... I have topped up with diesel but there is clearly air in the fuel line and the engine won't start..

Is there an idiot's guide on how to bleed the fuel lines anybody can point me at?

The van is parked on a slight slope with the engine end higher than the fuel tank. Would levelling it out help at all?

Make sure that you have a fully charged battery.

Loosen off the fuel lines where they go into the injectors and crank her over until fuel comes out of the loosened fuel lines.
Nip them up when fuel comes out.

I have heard of people sucking on the end of the fuel line to pull fuel up into the filter - not something that I would recommend.

Sooo.... All sorted. thanks to my engine being an old passat/jetta/golf mk2 number I didn't have to loosen anything, there was a short piece of rubber fuel line coming out of the injector nearest to the back of the van with a little stopper in the end. Was able to pop that out and, with the help of a battery boost, and more diesel we managed to turn engine, bleed air and get her going again...
